## Power Cycle Your Fiber Equipment If the EPB network is online but your home lacks internet access, rebooting your hardware often resolves configuration conflicts and clears temporary system errors. Follow this specific sequence to power cycle your equipment: 1. **Unplug the Router:** Disconnect the power cable from the back of your Wi-Fi router. 2. **Unplug the ONT:** Locate your Optical Network Terminal (the device where the fiber line enters your home, which acts as the fiber modem) and disconnect its power source. If your ONT has a battery backup, you may need to temporarily disconnect the battery to fully power it down. 3. **Wait:** Keep both devices unplugged for at least 60 seconds to allow the memory cache to clear completely. 4. **Power up the ONT:** Plug the ONT back into the power outlet. Wait two to three minutes for the indicator lights to stabilize. The "Power" and "Optical" (or "PON") lights should turn solid green. 5. **Power up the Router:** Plug the router back in. Wait another two minutes for the router to establish a connection with the ONT and broadcast the Wi-Fi signal. ## Inspect Physical Cable Connections
Loose or damaged cables are a common cause of intermittent or complete internet loss. Inspect all physical connections in your setup: * **Ethernet Cables:** Ensure the Ethernet cable running from the ONT's data port to the WAN (Internet) port on your router is clicked securely into place at both ends. * **Fiber Patch Cable:** If you have an indoor ONT connected to a wall jack via a thin fiber patch cable, verify it is plugged in securely. Do not bend or crimp fiber optic cables, as the glass core inside can break easily. Never look directly into the end of a fiber optic cable or connector, as the invisible laser light can cause eye damage. * **Power Cables:** Verify that all power adapters are firmly plugged into both the device and a working wall outlet or surge protector. ## Bypass the Router to Test the Connection To determine if your Wi-Fi router is malfunctioning, bypass it entirely and connect a computer directly to the EPB ONT:
1. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the WAN port of your router. 2. Plug that same Ethernet cable directly into the Ethernet port of a laptop or desktop computer. 3. Attempt to load a webpage. If the internet works when connected directly to the ONT, your fiber line is active, and the issue lies with your Wi-Fi router. You may need to reset your router to factory settings or replace the hardware. If you lease a Smart NetPlus router from EPB, contact them for troubleshooting or a replacement unit. ## Interpret the LED Indicator Lights The lights on your ONT and router provide diagnostic information about your connection status:
* **Data/LAN Light:** This light should flash green or amber, indicating active data transmission between the ONT and the router. If this light is off, the devices are not communicating. * **Optical/PON Light:** A solid green light indicates a strong fiber signal from EPB. A red or blinking light indicates a loss of signal (LOS), which usually means the physical fiber line outside is damaged or disconnected. * **Internet/WAN Light on Router:** A green or white light indicates an active internet connection. A red or amber light indicates the router is powered on but cannot detect an internet signal from the ONT.
