The Head and Neck Support (HANS) device, a carbon-fiber collar worn over the shoulders and secured by the harness, connects to the driver's helmet with tethers. ### The Car of Tomorrow (CoT) Introduced in 2007, the Car of Tomorrow was designed with driver safety as the primary focus. The cockpit was widened and heightened, moving the driver's seat closer to the center of the vehicle to increase the crumple zone on the sides. It also incorporated double-sided impact foam in the doors and a reinforced roll cage to prevent cabin intrusion during rollovers. ### The Next Gen Car Introduced in 2022, the Next Gen car took safety further with redesigned front and rear bumpers designed to crush more effectively during impacts, reducing the energy transferred to the driver's cockpit. The chassis also features independent rear suspension and a carbon-fiber tub to protect the driver. ### Roof Flaps To prevent cars from lifting off the ground and flipping during high-speed spins, NASCAR introduced roof flaps in 1994. These flaps deploy automatically when a car spins backward, disrupting the airflow and keeping the tires on the asphalt. ## Driver Gear and Cockpit Innovations
Beyond the car frame and track walls, safety advancements extended to the immediate cockpit environment: * **Six-Point Harnesses:** Standard seatbelts were replaced by highly secure five- and six-point harnesses to keep drivers firmly secured in their custom-molded carbon-fiber seats. * **Fire-Retardant Suits:** Drivers wear multi-layer suits made of Nomex, a fire-resistant material, alongside fire-retardant undergarments, gloves, and shoes. * **Onboard Fire Suppression:** Automatic and manual fire suppression systems are installed in every car, designed to extinguish engine and cockpit fires instantly. ## Continuous Improvement and Data Collection To ensure ongoing safety improvements, NASCAR utilizes Incident Data Recorders (black boxes) in every vehicle. These devices measure the exact G-forces and impact angles during a crash. This data is analyzed by safety experts to identify weak points in the car's structure or safety gear, allowing for continuous, data-driven safety updates.
