While minor accidental drainage may occur, intentional at-home removal is rarely safe, with clear guidelines for when DIY attempts are dangerous and proper steps to care for a drained cyst to prevent complications. ## Risks of At-Home Cyst Popping The most common immediate risk of at-home cyst popping is bacterial infection. Cysts are typically filled with keratin, dead skin cells, and sometimes purulent pus if inflamed, and unsterile squeezing or cutting can push bacteria deep into underlying skin layers, leading to cellulitis, painful abscesses, or even systemic infection if left untreated. Improper removal also frequently causes permanent scarring: the pressure of squeezing or accidental cuts from sharp tools damages surrounding collagen and tissue, leading to raised keloids or depressed scars that are far more difficult to treat than the original cyst.
